World Youth Meeting of CCR ∙ Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil 2012

Event Report

Days of empowerment for a prophetic youth

After nearly two years of hard work and much expectation, finally the charismatic youth from around the world gathered to celebrate together their faith. Between 10 and 15 July 2012, thousands of people were in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) to attend the World Youth Meeting of Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

The programme was designed to provide fellowship among the various realities of CCR, which allowed the leaders of the movement to share experiences of living the charismatic identity. The workshops and preachings encouraged the youth to put their hope in Jesus’ name and to witness their faith. Another remarkable element was the strong missionary appeal present in talks and prayers.

The evenings of the World Youth Meeting were dedicated to artistic performances. In a variety of colours, sounds and images, representatives from different countries brought to the stage of the event a bit of their culture: Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Canada, South Korea and the host, Brazil.

As part of the programme, two activities were held outside the Convention Centre and drew attention. The first one was a tree planting in the city of Foz do Iguaçu. The 450 seedlings were calculated in accordance with the terms of the Kyoto Protocol for the neutralisation of carbon emissions coming from the event.

A public proclamation of faith was the other outward action. In a route of six miles to the Cathedral of the city, a pilgrimage exalted the Holy Cross. There were moments of prayer and animation, through which the youth were able to witness the Lordship of Jesus.

An important highlight is that the XXX National Congress of CCR Brazil took place simultaneously with the WYM in the same Convention Centre.

During the closing ceremony of the event, the Chairman of the ICCRS Youth Committee and President of the CCR Brazil National Council, Marcos Volcan, made a brief evaluation on the importance of the Meeting for the life of the movement: “We want to celebrate in advance what will happen in the 50 years of CCR. We have the grace to see what many generations did not see, we are reaching the world with an awakening of an extremely vigorous youth. There were days when God consolidated in our hearts what He was preparing for a long time.”

The National Coordinator of CCR Brazil Youth Ministry, Marcio Zolin, and one of those responsible for organising the event said that the Meeting was an opportunity to strengthen youth leadership, but encouraged all not to forget those who preceded them in the pastoral path and remained steadfast all these years: “If the ‘gray hairs’ are still here, it is because they have deep roots, firm on the rock, like the cedar of Lebanon,” he reflected.
As for the ICCRS President, Michelle Moran, the event was of great relevance, as it brought together people from all corners of the world to celebrate together. “We live something new, prophetic. We are going towards the Jubilee and we must have the youth with us on that path,” she declared.

In this issue: A report of the first World-Youth-Conference of ICCRS.
4.500 young people from all over the world met from the 10th till the 15th of July 2012 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brasil, for the first World-Youth-Conference held by ICCRS. A report by Christof Hemberger from Europe.

GOD IS LEADING US IN THE FUTURE

The conference was a great blessing and its fruits will definitely last long – the gathering of CCR-youth and young adults from all over the world seemed to me a prophetic sign for the worldwide Renewal: We do not live in the past – God is leading us into the future!

Since the World-Youth-Conference was held in Brazil the majority of the participants came from Latin-America. I enjoyed the enthusiasm and zeal of these young men and women of this continent: I enjoyed their powerful worship as well as their joy of being host of such a conference.

The theme of the Conference was a passage from the Gospel of Matthew: ‘All people will take their hope in Jesus’. Teachers like Michelle Moran, Jim Murphy, Patti Mansfield as well as young leaders of the CCR in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world did a great job in proclaiming the Hope that the Holy Spirit is raising in us when we begin to trust in the Lord.

Various Bishops, many priests and deacons were present as well as CCR Leaders from all over the world.

Besides daily masses, teachings and prayer-times the program was enriched by workshops and testimonies about the reality, ministry and the vision of young people in the CCR today. At one afternoon young leaders from all continents were interviewed at a ‘round table’ about their experiences, the structure of their CCR-youth-ministry back home and about their ways to reach young people.

Brasil

Next to the World-Youth-Conference the Brazilian CCR run their national conference. When this conference ended several thousand participants then joined the youth-meeting so in the end there were more than 10.000 participants present at the final days.

An international conference always gives insight into the reality of the nation that functions as host. I was amazed and touched about the zeal and the maturity of the young leaders in Brazil! The Brazilian CCR exists mainly out of young people (60% are younger than 40 years!). They are running a lot of outreach and mission activities e.g. in universities (students), at the beaches of the Coppa Cabana (tourists) and in the Amazon-area (poor natives). I will not forget their joy of sharing the gospel and proclaiming their hope not only in their prayer-meetings but also in today’s world!

Global CCR

After the conference the ICCRS Council met from 17th till 21st of July to share about the developments of the global CCR and to decide about the upcoming activities and projects of ICCRS. A report about this council meeting will be sent to the national leaders in a short time.

The event is one of the activities promoted by ICCRS in preparation for the Golden Jubilee to be celebrated in the year 2017, but it also serves to introduce the Catholic Charismatic Renewal youth to the entire world. 5,000 young people are expected for the event, representing more than 100 countries.
The programme is varied, including several meaningful activities for youth. The first activity programmed is a pilgrimage with a cross as a great public manifestation of faith. The programme also offers pre-conference activities for the participants from abroad, who will be able to choose from four missionary activities.
On the following days, the programme will include prayer and worship sessions, talks, formation activities and masses during the day, whereas in the evenings there will be cultural and artistic presentations by the different countries participating in the Conference.
Providing an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Foz do Iguaçu, there will be a different activity on Saturday: the participants will go on a walk to the National Park of Iguaçu. It will be a pilgrimage that includes spirituality, sharing of experiences and contact with nature!

An important highlight is that CCR in Brazil will hold simultaneously its XXX National Congress, an outstanding occasion for sharing as CCR family.

It is good idea to the youth all the world. This is a way of bringing the youth together to share experiences, scriptural, prayers etc. What are challenges facing the youth in Catholic Charismatic Renewal today in the Church? And what are the challenges facing the leaders of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal today in the church today?
